The Castle of the Chistian Monarchs

This former fortress and residence of Christian kings was where both the conquest of the Nasrid kingdom and the discovery of America were planned. The Alcázar (built under Alfonso XI ‘El Justiciero’) forms an almost square compound, its corners protected by towers such as the Keep and Los Leones. It houses a valuable collection of Roman mosaics (2nd and 3rd century AD) with different figurative and geometric
designs. Beneath the Salón de Mosaicos are the Baños Reales, or Royal Baths. Also of interest are its Moorish-inspired gardens with palm trees, cypresses and orange and lemon trees interspersing the ponds and fountains.
